RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate handling and transport variables as potential causes of disturbed behaviour in response to seeing a person on an overhead observation platform during pre-slaughter in batches of females and castrated males composed of pure or crossed Bos Taurus animals (Aberdeen Angus, Red Angus, Hereford and Charolais) with a maximum of 37.5% Bos indicus, and maturity at slaughter varying from zero to eight teeth, coming from pasture and confined systems. For the batches of castrated males, the independent variables included the distance covered on the trip, and the handling and facilities on the farms. For the female batches, the variables were travel time and waiting time prior to unloading. For both sexes, the presence of horns in the batches and the load density were included in the regression equations. Disturbed behaviour, the result of factors related to animal handling and transportation, is detrimental to satisfactory results in production systems. It is up to the managers in the production chain to seek alternatives in order to minimise inappropriate behaviour, which is one determinant of loss. Handling and transport are determining factors in the behaviour of beef cattle during the pre-slaughter period.

RESUMO

Due to the lack of information concerning the buffalo production chain, the aim of this survey was to identify consumer behaviour, acceptance and trends in relation to buffalo meat. The survey research method was used, for which an online questionnaire was prepared using Google Forms, and distributed via digital platforms to Brazilian consumers. Using the exploratory technique of multivariate statistics, ordination was carried out by principal component analysis (PCA), where the words were grouped into dimensions. Of the respondents, 44.82% had already consumed buffalo meat; however, many did not know whether they had already tried it, since 50.24% of the respondents said they could not identify any difference between buffalo meat and beef. An identification and indication of the origin were considered important by 44.82% of respondents. The respondents cited 1130 different terms, the word 'quality' appearing in most responses. Principal component analysis explained 93.32% of the variations in the consumer perception of buffalo meat. A part of Brazilian consumers is unaware of the buffalo production chain, and have never had the opportunity to consume the meat. The creation and divulgation of a certificate of identification, together with the benefits to health from consuming buffalo meat is fundamental for consumer confidence, which, together with the ready availability of the product, would allow expansion, consolidation and improvement of the production chain. The results of the study show the potential for increasing the consumption of buffalo meat among Brazilian consumers, providing the product included a guarantee of origin, quality and healthiness.

RESUMO

Potential variables for the reproductive success of beef cows were evaluated. Included in the model were the age of the cow at calving; the interval between the Julian calving date and the end of the breeding season; the body weight and conditions at calving, at 75 days post-partum and at the end of the breeding season; and the mean daily variation in weight between these dates. Logistic regression was used in the analysis, with the parameters evaluated using the odds ratio statistic, estimating the chance of pregnancy. The mean rate of pregnancy was 84% and 55% for early and late-weaned cows, respectively. For early weaned cows, the regression variables were the Julian calving date, age of the cow, weight gain from calving to 75 days post-partum, and from 75 days post-partum to the end of the reproductive period. For late-weaned cows, there were only two regression variables, weight at calving and weight gain from calving to the end of the reproductive period. For every year above the average age of the herd, early weaned cows have an 80.9% greater chance of pregnancy, while a reduction of one year reduces the chance of pregnancy by 44.7%. In early weaned cows, every seven days after the mean Julian calving date reduces the chances of pregnancy by 22.6%, whereas every seven days before the mean calving date increases pregnancy by 29.2%. Greater gains in cow body weight, from calving to the end of the reproductive period, determine a greater probability of pregnancy.

RESUMO

Little is known about the performance, carcass, and meat traits of locally adapted cattle in Brazil. This study aimed to compare the growth, slaughter, and carcass traits as well as meat quality of two local breeds (Curraleiro Pé-Duro and Pantaneiro) with the Nelore breed. Fifteen 30-month-old steers of each breed were weighted (Curraleiro Pé-Duro = 264.80 kg; Nelore = 346.80 kg; Pantaneiro = 316.20 kg) and raised in a feedlot condition for 112 days, with measurements to assess growth and slaughter, visual and carcass and meat traits. Data were submitted to variance and multivariate analyses. Nelore and Curraleiro Pé-Duro had similar Gluteus medius depths. Pantaneiro and Curraleiro Pé-Duro were superior for leg compactness index (P < 0.05) and had higher eye muscle area than Nelore (P < 0.05). Although there was no difference in daily weight gain and slaughter weight between breeds, Curraleiro Pé-Duro had a lower initial weight (264.80 kg) when compared to Nelore (346.80 kg; P < 0.05). Nelore and Curraleiro Pé-Duro deposited more fat than Pantaneiro (P < 0.05), while Curraleiro Pé-Duro and Pantaneiro had more muscle than Nelore (P < 0.05), which also had more bone and a higher percentage of second-quality cuts (P < 0.05). Meat from Nelore also showed lower succulence than Pantaneiro (P < 0.05) and higher shear force than the other breeds (P < 0.05). Pantaneiro's meat had the most capacity to retain water (P < 0.05), lower shear force (P < 0.05), and was more succulent (P < 0.05) when compared to the other breeds. Multivariate analysis showed that Pantaneiro, Curraleiro Pé-Duro, and Nelore breeds can be considered distinct in growth, carcass, and meat traits, with the local breeds showing superior meat traits. The local breeds Curraleiro Pé-Duro and Pantaneiro presented characteristics similar or better to those of the Nelore, proving to be animals with great productive potential and generate high meat quality under feedlot conditions.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate pre-slaughter risk factors on the probability of bruising and the number of bruises in different regions of the bovine carcass. The study evaluated the data from 4061 batches of slaughtered cattle, totalling 199,026 carcasses, from Hereford and Aberdeen Angus animals in crosses with continental European breeds and Zebu cattle. The factors that caused injury were sex, handling conditions (score), vehicle type, vehicle load density (kg/m2), travel time (minutes), travel distance (kilometres), physiological maturity (dentition), animal reactivity (score), and carcass fat (score). The type of vehicle had the greatest influence on the probability of carcass bruising and affected all carcass cuts. More bruising occurred in vehicles with a greater load capacity. A higher chance of bruising was seen in groups of older animals, those with an excitable temperament and, especially, in groups of females. Higher load densities during transport resulted in a greater chance of bruising occurring in all cuts except the hindquarters. Distance and travel time are unstable in the models, but also detrimental, increasing the probability of bruising and the number of bruises in the various cuts. The results of this study suggest that good practices in the welfare, handling and transport of the animals, as well as training the personnel responsible for their handling, should be adopted to minimise the risk of injury at different locations on the carcass.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of slaughtering feedlot Texel lambs during different climatic conditions on carcass and meat quality traits. Twenty castrated male Texel lambs (21.8 ± 0.62 kg) were distributed to two treatments according to the climatic conditions during the finishing period and at pre-slaughter: warm season (WS; mean temperature of 23.4 °C and 77.5% relative humidity) and cool season (CS; mean temperature of 14.9 °C and 79.5% relative humidity). During the pre-slaughter, thermal comfort was evaluated through the variables: respiratory frequency, rectal temperature, temperature of the ocular region, and temperature-humidity index (THI). After the finishing period, lambs were slaughtered, and carcass and meat quality traits were assessed. The THI values indicate that animals harvested in the WS spent 13 h of the day under potential thermal discomfort conditions in the week before slaughter and in the pre-slaughter period, whereas lambs harvested in the CS did not experience any thermal discomfort. Slaughter weight, carcass weight, carcass dressing, and backfat thickness were greater (P ≤ 0.03), whereas cooling losses were lower (P < 0.01) for lambs slaughtered in the CS. Moreover, thawing losses were lower (P < 0.01), whereas cooking losses were greater (P < 0.01) for lambs harvested in the CS. Lambs slaughtered in the CS also showed greater meat redness, yellowness, and chroma values (P < 0.05). Although carcass traits were affected by the greater thermal discomfort exposure, meat quality of lambs was less impacted by the climatic conditions at slaughter.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the productive and reproductive performance of Charolais cows with different body mass index (BMI) at calving and the development of their calves. Seventy-two Charolais cows and their calves were grouped into BMI classes at calving, namely, low, moderate, and high. Body mass index was determined by dividing the cows' body weight by their body length and hip height and finally dividing the result by 10. Cows and their calves were weighed immediately after calving, at early weaning (63-day postpartum), and at pregnancy diagnosis (210-day postpartum). To evaluate milk production and quality, collections were performed at 21, 42, and 63 days after calving. Cows with high and moderate BMI were heavier (P < 0.05) than low-BMI cows from calving to the date of pregnancy diagnosis. Calves from low-BMI cows were heavier (P < 0.05) at 210-day postpartum than those born to cows with moderate and high BMI. The low- and moderate-BMI cows had higher pregnancy rates than those with a high BMI and were more efficient (P < 0.05) at calving and at weaning in kilograms of calf produced per kilogram of cow kept in the herd. High- and moderate-BMI cows had the highest milk production, whereas low-BMI cows produced milk with the highest concentrations of lactose and solids-not-fat (P < 0.05). Charolais cows with low and moderate BMI at calving are more efficient in production systems. The BMI may be considered a selection variable to improve the productive results of breeding herds.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of conception weight and gestational weight gain on performance and productive efficiency in beef cows and their calves. Eighty-eight primiparous, three-year old Braford females were used, divided according to weight at conception and gestational performance (High and Low): cows with a low conception weight and low gestational weight gain (LL), cows with low conception weight and high gestational weight gain (LH), cows with high conception weight and low gestational weight gain (HL), and cows with high conception weight and high gestational weight gain (HH). At calving, HH cows were heavier than LH and HL and these were heavier than LL cows. Male calves born to HH cows were superior in body weight to those born to LL cows at 150, 210 and 365 days. Female calves born to HH, HL or LH cows were superior to those born to LL cows in pregnancy at 14 months of age. The LL and HL cows were more efficient in calf production. Actual fertility was influenced by the nutritional level of the herd, where HH cows were superior than LL cows. Better cow herd nutrition increases the development and performance of the progeny.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the performance in feedlot and temperament of Nellore bulls classified by residual feed intake. The residual feed intake was calculated as the difference between the observed and predicted dry matter intake. Bulls classified as low residual feed intake had lower dry matter intake (kg day-1) and dry matter intake (g kg-1 d-1) of body weight, and were more efficient in feed conversion ratio than those classified as medium and high. The average daily gain didn't differ among residual feed intake classes and was 1.69 kg day-1, 1.82 kg day-1 and 1.71 kg day-1 for bulls classified as low, medium, or high, respectively. The residual feed intake was positively associated with dry matter intake, feed conversion ratio and subcutaneous fat thickness. The subcutaneous fat thickness was lower in bulls classified as low residual feed intake than in those with medium and high. No differences were observed in flight speed and reactivity score among residual feed intake classes. Overall, we concluded that bulls classified as low residual feed intake consumed less dry matter than high, with no differences in average daily gain, temperamentand had better feed efficiency, albeit their subcutaneous fat thickness was lower.

RESUMO

Improving beef cattle production in pasture-based systems without expanding agricultural land has been the focus of several studies over the last decades. Nitrogen fertilization is one of the available strategies with high potential to optimize cattle performance in tropical systems. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of increasing nitrogen levels (150, 300, and 450 kg ha-1 of N year-1) in Megathyrsus maximus cv. Mombasa in the humid tropics of the Amazon. The following parameters were evaluated: pasture agronomic characteristics, herbage chemical composition, and beef cattle performance. A total of 24 nine-month-old Nellore bulls with initial mean weight of 173 ± 1.95 kg were used for the performance test. The experimental design was a randomized block with three treatments. Herbage mass and leaf mass contents were increased by the highest nitrogen level (P < 0.05). Nitrogen levels elevated the forage accumulation rate, final leaf blade length, and pre-grazing canopy height(P < 0.05). The crude protein content increased at the highest N level (P < 0.05). The neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber contents decreased with increasing N levels. The stocking rate and total weight gain per hectare were higher in bulls grazing pastures fertilized with 450 compared with 150 kg ha-1 of N year-1(P < 0.05). The average daily gain was influenced by N levels (P < 0.05). Nitrogen levels at 300 and 450 kg increased animal weight gain and productivity per area by increasing forage yield and improving the chemical composition of Mombasa grass.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of two sub-periods of the calving season and two cow maturity stages on the efficiency of beef cows and their calves. A total of 159 cow-calf pairs were divided by calving time (early or late) within the calving season and maturity stage (young or adult). Calves were weaned at 42 or 63 days after birth and evaluated until 210 days of age. Cows and calves had their development examined based on their weight and body condition score at calving, at weaning, and at 210 days. Reproductive performance was evaluated on the basis of time to become pregnant again. Milk yield was assessed by the direct method on three occasions spaced 21 days apart. Adult cows were heavier than young cows, at calving (398.5 vs 327.5 kg, respectively), weaning (397.3 vs 324.1 kg, respectively) at the end breeding season (424.1 vs 342.1 kg, respectively). Reproductive performance was influenced by calving time. Adult cows had higher pregnancy rates (83.75 and 69.17%, for early and for late calving, respectively) than young cows (57.03 and 35.01% for early and for late-calving, respectively). Calves from early-calving young cows weighed 158.8 kg at 210 days of age vs. 123.7 kg for those born from late-calving adult cows. However, late-calving cows produced 10.7% more milk than those that calved early in the season (227.0 vs 205.0 liters, respectively). Early calving associated with non-requirement of growth determine higher productivity efficiency in beef cows.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The goal of the present study was to assess the economic viability relating to the risk of replacing corn with pearl millet in diets with 80% concentration for feedlot cattle confined for 89 days. Replacement levels were: 0, 33, 66, and 100%. The risk was estimated using Monte Carlo simulation, Spearman's rank correlation test between input variables, stochastic dominance, and analysis of sensitivity. The expected average values ± standard deviation for net present value (R$/animal) were ± 71.74 ± 283.32, 91.23 ± 285.18, 196.05 ± 273.79, and 223.80 ± 267.96 for diets containing 0, 33, 66, and 100% of pearl millet, respectively. The probability of ≥0 net present value was 63.4, 66.1, 78.4, and 82.4%, respectively. The net present values were statistically different (P<0.05), and the higher levels dominated the lower values. The items that most influenced the net present values were, in descending order, prices of unfinished and finished cattle, initial and final weights, prices of concentrate and forage, concentrate and forage consumption. Based on the results of the simulation, diet of 100% pearl millet exhibited the best economic viability.

This study aimed to assess preslaughter factors responsible for the occurrence of bruises to front, rib, loin, hip, and round sites of cattle carcasses. Data from the slaughter of 148 loads of cattle were assessed, totaling 4,611 carcasses. Evaluated bruising factor variables were animal gender, journey distance (km), vehicle type (m²), journey time (hours), load density (kg/m2 ), handling and facilities conditions (optimal, acceptable, and unacceptable), and unloading waiting time (min). Gender had the strongest influence on carcass bruising, being the first variable to enter in the majority of models related to the carcass sites. Female carcasses displayed higher bruising in all sites. Densities above 401 kg/m² caused more bruising. With the exception of the loin, unacceptable, and acceptable conditions assigned to farm facilities and handling resulted in higher average bruising. Articulated vehicles with a greater load capacity were more likely to cause bruising. The effects of variables causing bruises act differently in the various carcass sites. In this sense, the results of this study suggested possible management practices for specific problems during the preslaughter period to minimize losses by bruising to different carcass sites.

RESUMO

Assessment of the productive efficiency of 30 primiparous Aberdeen Angus cows of different body sizes, classified at calving as heavy (375±10.5 kg) or light (283±7.7 kg), and different total milk-yield levels, classified as high (868±24.5 kg) or low (547±18.3 kg). Heavy cows were superior in weight at calving and weaning, but there were no differences in milk yield and weight at birth and weaning of calves. Heavy cows were less efficient than light cows in the production of kilograms of calves per 100 kg of cows at calving and at weaning. High milk producing cows were heavier at calving and had heavier calves at birth and weaning, but did not differ between the milk-yield levels for the variation in daily weight. The variation in daily weight of the calves was greater from high-producing cows. High milk producing dairy beef cows were more efficient at weaning, and their calves required less milk to produce one kilogram of live weight.

The objective was to assess the performance of 96 pregnant cows of the genetic groups (GG) Charolais (C), Nellore (N), ½ CN and ½ NC, subjected to the following treatments: kept exclusively in natural pastures (NP) throughout the experimental period; kept in cultivated pastures (CP) from July 15 to Setp 15 (CPNP) or from Sept 15 to Nov 15 (NPCP) and the remainder of the experimental period in NP. The weight at the end of the first grazing period (Sept 15) was higher for the CPNP cows than those of the NPCP and NP. The weight at the end of the second period (Nov 15) was 456, 428 and 392 kg respectively for NPCP, CPNP and NP. At calving, the heaviest cows were the CPNP, followed by the NPCP and the NP. At weaning, 90 days postpartum, the heaviest were the NPCP, followed by the CPNP and NP. Nelore cows were less heavy in all evaluations, followed by C, with the F1s' weight higher than the purebreds. The grazing sequences did not affect the percentages of the cows in estrus and pregnancy, but did influence the invervals between calving and first estrus postpartum (ICE). The GG influenced the rate of cows in estrus, pregnant and the ICE which was lower in the F1 (103 days), followed by the C (109 days) and had the largest interval N (119 days). The grazing sequences affect the average daily weight gain (ADG) of calves until weaning at 90 days of age. The GG of the calf affected the ADG at to 210 days.

The joint analysis of indicators of the investment project is very relevant in making decisions, resulting in more consistent information regarding risk assessment and its confrontation with the possibility of return. This research aimed to evaluate the economic feasibility of Red Angus young steers finished in feedlot, slaughtered at 340, 373, 396 or 430kg with use of various financial indicators, marketed with or without bonus. The purchase of feeder cattle and feeding were variable costs with a higher share in the total cost. In the analysis with bonus, the regression analysis to gross margin, net margin, net present value, benefit:cost index and additional return on investment showed quadratic behavior, with the point of maximum at 406kg (R$ 185.17), 406kg (R$ 161.76) , 393kg (R$ 128.29), 392kg (1.12), 392kg (11.98%), respectively. In the analysis without bonus, gross margin and net margin showed a quadratic response (346kg, with R$ 110.31 and R$ 86.90, respectively), while for the other indicators, there was a linear reduction as an increase in slaughter weight.

The objective was to evaluate the carcass characteristics of feedlot bulls fed levels of concentrate (65 and 71%) with or without the inclusion of 35% of babassu mesocarp bran (BMB) in concentrate fraction of the diet. Twenty eight young bulls were used, with initial age of 21 month and 356.7±19.2 kg of initial body weight. The experimental design was completely randomized design with treatments in a factorial arrangement 2x2. Hot and cold carcass weights were not affected by dietary concentrate level and the inclusion of BMB in the concentrate, with average values of 256.39 and 245.87 kg, respectively. Hot and cold carcass yield were lower for diets that associated the lower level of concentrate and 35% of BMB in the concentrate fraction of the diet. Subcutaneous fat thickness, conformation and carcass physiological maturity were not affected by concentrate level and the inclusion of the BMB, averaging 3.6 mm, 10.89 and 12.93 points respectively. The inclusion of 35% of BMB in the concentrate associated with different levels of concentrates did not alter commercial cuts weight. The inclusion of 35% of the BMB in the concentrate fraction of diets with high concentrate for feedlot bulls does not change the carcass characteristics of economic interest, providing production of carcasses with adequate quality.

This study aimed to evaluate the economic returns of beef cow herd subject or not to early weaning (EW), during three consecutive years. Using experimental results of the performance of beef cows, two structures of cow herds were simulated with different weaning ages of production systems in areas of 2,000 hectares. The economic evaluation was performed by the revenue of the systems with numbers, weights and values of the categories, subtracting the additional costs of EW. We considered in the costs of EW the additional spending on food and sanitary handling of calves. Weaning rates were 83.6% for EW and 44.5% for weaning at conventional age (CW). The systems originated the production of 139,306 and 90,578 kg of calves for the EW and CW systems, respectively. The EW system was more efficient, producing total profit of 19,361 kg of calves, with a return of R$ 5.76 for each R$ 1.00 invested. The sum of the productions of weights of cows and calves were 103,848 and 65,115 kg for EW and CW, respectively. The increase in pregnancy rate increased the offtake rate with averages of 39.12 and 25.04%, respectively, for EW and CW. Despite the additional costs to the productive system, the use of EW showed the highest weight gain, best value in the sales price of cull cows sold fat for slaughter, enabling its use by the surplus of revenue over expenses compared to CW. Early weaning provides dilution of costs and greater production efficiency of cows.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of feedlot finishing of steers (22.8 months) and young steers (15.2 months), using or not a correlation between the random input variables (data collected from 2004 to 2010) in the simulation of the Net Present Value (NPV) financial indicator. The animals were fed a diet containing roughage:concentrate ratio of 60:40 for 34 and 143 days, respectively, until they had reached a predetermined slaughter weight of 430 kg. For the NPV simulation, Latin Hypercube sampling was used, with 2000 interactions. The stochastic dominance analysis, test of differences between pairs of curves of cumulative distributions and sensitivity analysis were carried out. The NPV simulation using the correlation resulted in the best option for risk estimate. The confinement of young steers was the alternative of investment most viable than confinement of steers (NPV ≥ 0 of 80.4 vs. 62.3% in the simulation with correlation, respectively). Sensitivity analysis determined the following items had the greatest impact on the estimate of NPV: prices of fat and thin cattle, initial and final weights, diet costs, minimum rate of attractiveness and diet intake.

The study aimed to evaluate the nutrients intake and performance of Nellore heifers fed with chopped sugarcane, fresh (FS) or treated (HS) with 0.5% of Ca(OH)2 and stored during 24, 48 or 72 hours. It was used twenty-four heifers with nine months age and 119.6±8.1kg of initial body weight. The experimental design was completely randomized with four treatments and six replications. The dry matter intake showed an average reduction of 29% by adding Ca(OH)2, and didn't change with the storage period. Calcium intake was increased by the use of HS in the diet, while maintaining acceptable levels of intake. Heifers fed with HS stored during 24, 48 and 72 hours had, respectively, average daily weight gain of 41, 30 and 35% lower than those fed with FS. The treatment of sugarcane with Ca(OH)2 is not recommended for feeding Nellore heifers, due to limited intake and lower weight gain.
